💡 Steering procedure: tighten stem nut to 45 Nm → loosen 1/4–1/2 turn → tighten HEAD nut to 90 Nm (final). NOT the older "90→back-off→60" pattern.

⚠ Common DR-Z 400 gotchas
Stator cover stripped Drain plug → soft alu, easy to strip. Hand-thread carefully.
Steering head bearing Notorious — check + grease every 6,000 km.
Carb starter/idle E model carb often runs lean — JD/Dynojet kit common upgrade.
Front sprocket fall-off Old-style retainer — check after every long ride.
Cam chain tensioner Auto tensioner can fail — listen for new rattle.
Fork seals leak Check for sheen on inner tubes; clean fork-fluid trap dirt.
Front sprocket 145 Nm myth Manual is 110 Nm — don't over-do it.
